Ask a seasoned pitmaster or a professional chef about their favorite fuel for a long smoking session, and chances are the answer is ‘Marabu’. If you’re ready to take your BBQ game to the next level and want ultimate control over your fire, then the Giant Flames Marabu Charcoal (available in hefty 10 kg bags) is your new best friend.

What makes Marabu charcoal the favorite of pitmasters?

Marabu charcoal is made from the invasive bush of the same name. By utilizing these bushes, we contribute to the restoration of the natural environment – a beautiful, sustainable way of upcycling.

The wood of the Marabu bush is extremely dense and hard. And you’ll immediately notice this in its impressive performance in your barbecue. Let’s list the benefits for you:

  • Insane burn time: With a burn time of no less than 8 to 12 hours, refilling mid-session is a thing of the past.
  • Neutral flavor: Marabu has a very neutral aroma, minimal smoke, and little odor. Ideal, because it lets you control the flavor profile with your own smoking wood.
  • Kamado-proof: While some fuels produce too much ash and block your airflow, Marabu leaves hardly any ash. This makes it the absolute top choice for Kamados, but it’s also fantastic in kettle barbecues and smokers.

Low & Slow or screaming hot grilling

Because of the large, compact pieces in our 10 kg bags, you can create an incredibly stable temperature. This makes it the ultimate fuel for authentic ‘Low & Slow’ cooking. Think of smoking a tender Pulled Pork for hours, an impressive Prawns Plancha-Style, or deliciously Grilled Pineapple with Rum and Cinnamon.

But make no mistake: open the vents of your BBQ, and this hard charcoal can effortlessly reach extremely high temperatures as well. Perfect for searing a thick steak!

How do you light Marabu charcoal?

There is one small thing to keep in mind: due to the extreme density of the wood, Marabu requires just a bit more time and oxygen to light than standard charcoal. But with the right Fire Starters, that’s no problem at all.

Make a small crater in your coals and use a few good, natural firelighter cubes or kindling wood. Make sure the vents of your BBQ (and the lid) are fully open to allow maximum oxygen flow. Want to speed up the process? Then use our chimney starter for a fast, oxygen-rich ignition.
